Course Overview

The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hospitality Management is designed to develop you into a professional, self-reflective leader capable of meeting the demands of the hospitality industry and adapting to an ever-changing global environment. This qualification provides a strong foundation in management, operations, and customer service, preparing you for success across a variety of sectors.

The HND in Hospitality Management aims to:

  • Provide education and training for a wide range of management careers in hospitality, licensed retail, food and beverage, leisure, and tourism. Example roles include Food and Beverage Manager, Front of House Manager, or Events Manager.
  • Equip you with the managerial, technical, and operational skills necessary to perform at a high level in the global hospitality environment.
  • Develop an understanding of the local, regional, and international context of the hospitality industry, supporting students with a global outlook and preparing them for international career opportunities.
  • Foster knowledge of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural communication, and the values underpinning the tourism and hospitality sectors.
  • Enable you to explore contemporary challenges facing the industry, including sustainability, environmental impact, digital transformation, and globalisation.
  • Prepare you to make an immediate contribution to the workplace, combining academic knowledge with practical experience that meets the evolving needs of employers and the industry.
  • Provide the skills, knowledge, and professional understanding required to achieve high performance in a competitive, global hospitality environment.

Teaching

Our teaching approach is interactive, engaging, and practice-focused, combining academic theory with real-world application.

You will take part in on-campus and live online lectures, tutorials, and academic support sessions. Comprehensive online learning resources, including lecture notes, recordings, presentations, and handouts, are also available. You will have full access to both on-campus and electronic library facilities.

Independent learning is a vital component of the course, encouraging you to research, read academic journals, prepare reports, develop presentations, and complete projects.

Assessment

Assessment is primarily through practical coursework designed to reflect real-world workplace scenarios.

You will complete a variety of individual and group assignments, such as:

  • Design and development of digital materials.

BTECs are work-focused qualifications designed for students taking their first steps into employment, as well as for those already in the workforce seeking career advancement. They are widely recognised and respected by employers across a variety of industries.

The skills and knowledge gained on this course are particularly relevant to careers in hospitality management, leisure, and tourism, including roles in food and beverage management, hotel management, kitchen management, facilities management, and events management.

Graduates may also choose to progress to a BA (Hons) Top-Up degree in International Hospitality Management, at The London College - awarded by the University of Derby, further enhancing their career prospects and professional expertise.

Entry and Visa Requirements

Entry Requirements

You should hold at least one of the following:

  • BTEC Level 3 qualification
  • GCE A-Level(s) with strong results in a relevant subject
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma from a recognised institution
  • Foundation Diploma
  • UK or International equivalent of any of the above.

Additional Requirements

You should also hold at least one of the following:

  • Five GCSEs at grade C / 4 or above, including Maths and English Language (or equivalent)
  • Functional Skills Level 2 (Maths and English)
  • IELTS 5.5 or CEFR B2 (or equivalent).

If you do not hold any of the above, you will be required to successfully complete an English and/or Maths test at The London College.

If You Don’t Meet the Entry Requirements

You may still be considered for entry if you can demonstrate strong communication and learning skills, relevant knowledge, work experience, and motivation to succeed — typically supported by around three years of UK work experience.

If you do not hold GCSE Maths and English (or an equivalent qualification), you will be required to complete an English and/or Maths test at The London College as part of the entry process.

You must hold one of the following:

  • UK or Irish citizenship
  • EU Settled or Pre-Settled Status
  • Non-EU passport with ILR, LLR, or DLR
  • Valid work visa  (additional  residency and  immigration requirements apply)
  • Refugee status, or be the child or spouse of someone with refugee status
  • Humanitarian Protection.
