BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering Practice

Civil Engineers are responsible for virtually all the great structures around us. It’s the work that they do that makes or lives easier – from roads and airports, to access to clean water and electricity.

This course will develop your understanding of the process of civil engineering technical design and management. You will be introduced to key skills in structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. Through the mix of lectures, real-life projects and site visits, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for.

This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). You can visit www.jbm.org.uk for further information. This will lead to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT), and the Institute of Highway Engineers (MIHE) following a period of relevant experience and a professional review.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching methods will be varied, interactive and engaging.

You will take part in on campus lectures and live online lectures, tutorials, and academic support sessions. You will also access online learning content such as lecture notes, recordings, presentations, and handouts. You will also have access to our on-campus and electronic library.

When not attending lectures, you will also be studying independently. Independent learning plays a vital role in your studies and involves research, reading books and journals, preparing reports, presentations, and projects.

Assessment

We mostly assess you through practical coursework assignments.

You will be involved in the sort of tasks you might undertake in a workplace. Sometimes these will be individual tasks and at other times, you will need to work in a group. Assignments could include essays, reports, individual and group projects, research and consultancy projects, presentations, and design of digital materials.

As a graduate you'll have the knowledge and skills to start your career, as well as, the academic base for a range of careers in civil engineering and construction.

This course will prepare you for a range of construction and civil engineering jobs, such as: Building Control Surveyor, CAD Technician, Consulting Civil Engineer, Contracting Civil Engineer, Design Engineer, Site Engineer, Structural Engineer.

You can continue your professional development and further study in the discipline of civil engineering by taking an MSc degree in Civil Engineering and Construction Management.
