As the role of the hospitality manager becomes ever more complex and demanding, we cover all the crucial topics to help you hit the ground running in your career. You will gain skills in leadership, finance, IT and human resources to go with your in-depth knowledge of hospitality operations.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching methods will be varied, interactive and engaging.

You will take part in on campus lectures and live online lectures, tutorials, and academic support sessions. You will also access online learning content such as lecture notes, recordings, presentations, and handouts. You will also have access to our on-campus and electronic library.

When not attending lectures, you will also be studying independently. Independent learning plays a vital role in your studies and involves research, reading books and journals, preparing reports, presentations, and projects.

Assessment

We mostly assess you through practical coursework assignments.

You will be involved in the sort of tasks you might undertake in a workplace. Sometimes these will be individual tasks and at other times, you will need to work in a group. Assignments could include essays, reports, individual and group projects, research and consultancy projects, presentations, and design of digital materials.

You could progress to roles such as food and beverage or event supervisor, front office or housekeeping supervisor, assistant restaurant manager, graduate trainee hotel manager, sales executive, licensed retail manager or contract catering specialist.

You can consider progressing to postgraduate studies in related subjects, including MSc International Hospitality Management which prepares you not only for senior management but also for roles in academia.

The University of Derby works closely with local, national and international employers such as the Crieff Hydro, Gleneagles, Engineers Country Club, USA, White Manor Country Club USA, Carnegie Club (Skibo Castle), Hilton International, and Marriott.

Support is established using a university online e-recruitment portal, a method of tracking volunteering and work placements, academic engagement in conferences and generic and subject specialist skills.  There are also opportunities to participate in extra training courses run by external providers.  Both these will enhance students’ employability and link to the programme curriculum.  You will be further supported by a personal tutor via your professional and academic development modules, who ensures that timely guidance and advice is available throughout the degree programme.

• 96-112 UCAS points from A-level (up to 16 from AS-levels) or equivalent. 
• Five GCSEs at or above C (or Grade 4), including Maths and English or the equivalent.
